Eija-Liisa Ahtila

Born in H?meenlinna, Finland, in 1959, in a working class family that was not particularly interested in culture, Eija-Liisa Ahtila became interested in exhibitions and cinema of her own accord, from an early age. She briefly studied law, later turning to art studies with a stint at the London College of Printing from 1990 to 1991, then joined a night class at the American Film Institute of Los Angeles from 1994 to 1995. This second course taught her to master the traditional techniques of cinema, such as sound and picture editing. Her first artistic interests were focused on conceptual art, the philosophy of art and feminist movements. In the field of cinema, films by directors such as Fassbinder, Antonioni and Bergman represented a major influence on her conception of moving images. From 1990, she collaborated with director Maria Ruotsala. They produced the video Plato s Son, a kind of philosophical journey by an extraterrestrial who has come to study planet Earth.
