With the results of this referendum and the “DHAdmann *Pure taste* indicator and cap-price formulas”, the *Pure* taste indicator of an artist will be calculated and published as soon the minimum quantity of evaluations are completed.

Bernd Becher: born in Siegen, starts 1947 apprenticeship as decoration painter. 1953-56, studies painting and lithography at the Academy of Fine Arts, Stuttgart, under Karl Rossing. 1957-61, studies typography at the Dusseldorf Academy of Fine Arts. From 1959, works together with Hilla Becher (born, Hilla Wobeser). Hilla Becher: born in Potsdam, trains as a camera artist under Walter Eichgrun. 1958-61, studies in Dusseldorf. Later establishes a photo department in the Academy there. 1961, marries Bernd.In Dusseldorf, both start working as freelance photographers for the Troost Advertising Agency, focusing on product photography. In addition – influenced by the works of Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932), a forerunner of Die Neue Sachlichkeit, and August Sander (1876-1964) the internationally known sociological photographer of the New Objectivity movement, but also Conceptual art and Minimalism (Ed Ruscha) – they begin photographing the disappearing German industrial architecture. They start with structures located in the Ruhr Valley, from a straightforward “objective” point of view. They work exclusively on overcast days, in order to avoid shadows. Subjects include industrial plant, water towers, cooling towers, barns, grain elevators, blast furnaces, coal bunkers, oil tanks, storage silos, and warehouses. They also photograph in other countries, including Britain, France, and Belgium, as well as North America, where they visit heavy industrial sites in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and southern Ontario. Concept of the Artist
Bernd and Hilla Becher s photography can be considered conceptual art, typological study, and topological documentation. Their work can be linked to the Neue Sachlichkeit movement of the 1920s and to such masters of German photography as Karl Blossfeldt, August Sander, and Albert Renger-Patzsch. Their photographs of industrial structures, taken over the course of forty years, are the most important body of work in independent objective photography. A keynote of their contributions to “industrial archaeology” has been their creation of typologies of different types of buildings; this book, which accompanies a major retrospective exhibition, collects all known Becher studies of industrial building types and presents them as a visual encyclopedia.Each chapter is devoted to a different structure–water towers, coal bunkers, winding towers, breakers (ore, coal, and stone), lime kilns, grain elevators, blast furnaces, steel mills, and factory facades.
