Concept of the Artist

Arnulf Rainer s artistic work evolves in series.In his early representational drawings (1947-51) he was influenced by the theories of the Surrealists but turned away from them in 1951, partly in consequence of a meeting with Andr? Breton in Paris which he found disappointing.In Vienna, Rainer provoked the audience as a member of the Hundsgruppe (the group “Dogs”) in the pose of the buffoon. Organic-looking microstructures were created, and like the painting over of works later on, their disintegrating forms already herald the urge to advance through manipulation and destruction toward something new and superior. And this was the beginning of his informal painting.
