Concept of the Artist

Huang Yong Ping (Chinese/French, b.1954) is an influential Contemporary artist, living and working in Paris since 1989. Born and raised in Xiamen in southwest China, Huang originally studied painting in Hangzhou at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. Influenced by Dadaism and Surrealism, he went on to form his own avant-garde group called Xiamen Dada in 1986. As Huang?s work has evolved, he frequently works in large-scale, conceptual installation work, often influenced by the philosophies of Chan Buddhism and Taoism in addition to Western artists such as Marcel Duchamp and John Cage. An early example is the piece The History of Chinese Painting and the History of Modern Western Art Washed in the Washing Machine for Two Minutes (1987), which consists of the two seminal books reduced to pulp after having been run through a washing machine, as specified in its title.
