Maria Lassnig is known for her psychologically charged figurative paintings and works on paper, often semi-abstract, fleshy nudes and energetic, contorted self-portraits employing sparsely painted fields and extreme exploration of the body. Absorbing elements of automatism inspired by her studies with French writer, poet, and founder of Surrealism Andr? Breton, Lassnig dubs her technique “body awareness” (representing the body as it is internally experienced rather than externally perceived).
