Concept of the Artist

Hermann Nitsch is an Austrian artist known for his visceral performance art practice, often based on the ritualistic practice of sacrifice. Nitsch?s outrageous pieces are part of the tradition of Orgien Mysterien Theater involving blood, entrails, and nudity, which have sparked controversy since their inception in 1957. ?I want my work to stir up the audience, the participants of my performances. I want to arouse them by the means of sensual intensity and to bring them an understanding of their existence,? the artist has said. Born on August 29, 1936 in Vienna, Austria the painter, performer, and composer has developed his aktionen, or action performances, based off religious themes and customs since the 1950s. He is associated with the Vienna Actionists, comprised of G?nter Brus, Otto Muehl, and Rudolf Schwarzkogler, all of whom practice a form of confrontational art, influencing artists in the United States and abroad who have witnessed his work: Allan Kaprow, Carolee Schneemann, Nam June Paik, and Charlotte Moorman among them.
