Galerie Urs Meile, founded in Lucerne in 1992 by Urs Meile, has established a major international reputation for its engagement in showing emerging Chinese contemporary artists and positions from Europe whose work are intellectually challenging and outstanding in many ways. Currently, Galerie Urs Meile represents 14 of the most distinguished artists of the 21st century among them Ai Weiwei, Xie Nanxing, Li Dafang, Li Songsong, and Wang Xingwei. The gallerys artists work in various mediums, such as painting, photography, video, sculpture and installation.
As one of the first Western galleries with an engagement in the Chinese art scene since 1996, Galerie Urs Meile is operating from two locations (Beijing, China and Lucerne, Switzerland) to promote contemporary art of high quality covering most recent developments in the production of Chinese art.
The Beijing gallery designed by architect Ai Weiwei is located in the neighborhood of the National Film Museum, galleries, exhibition spaces, and the studios of other artists.
In 2003, Galerie Urs Meile and Chinese Art Archives & Warehouse (CAAW), Beijing, became partners basing common intentions on mututal collaboration in order to promote the development of Chinese contemporary art in an international context.
