Jason Rhoades
Jason Rhoades was an American installation artist. Best known for his eclectic constructions, he frequently used neon signage to explicitly address sexuality, consumer culture, and the art world. He emerged in the 1990s, alongside artists such as Matthew Barney and Cady Noland as part of the so-called ?scatter art? movement. American critic Saul Ostrow, writing in BOMB magazine, observed that ?Rhoades?s installations can be likened to a yard sale organized according to the principles of free association and stream of consciousness.? Perhaps the artist?s most notorious installation was The Black Pussy ... and the Pagan Idol Workshop (2005), which featured kitsch objects, toys, and consumer products arranged among neon signs depicting 487 different slang references to female genitalia. Born on July 9, 1965 in Newcastle, CA, Rhoades attended California College of the Arts in Oakland, California before receiving an MFA from the University of California Los Angeles in 1993. Rhoades remained an important an influential art world figure until his untimely death on August 1, 2006 in Los Angeles, CA at the age of 41. His work has been exhibited at spaces such as Hauser & Wirth in London and David Zwirner in New York.http://www.artnet.com/artists/jason-rhoades/
