Jiannan Wu

I’m a Chinese-born Artist specializing in sculpture and drawing. I completed my five-years sculpture study at China Academy of Art in China where I received my BFA degree. I completed two-years study and practice at New York Academy of Art in New York where I obtained my MFA degree in 2016. After graduation, I have been continuing my sculpture practice in New York and Europe. I’m represented by Accesso Galley in Italy. Culture combination is the prominent character of my art creation. Most of my works consists of my original Asian background, the influence of American culture, and the forms of Europe classical art. That is to say, I inject my Asian cultural awareness into my works to present the modern American culture in a foreigner’s eyes. I prefer a narrative and storytelling way to present people’s daily life in the city through my works. Subway and selfie are two main subjects of my creation at current stage. To realize my creative ideas mentioned above, along with my academic and cultural background, there are two primary characteristics of my creative techniques. First, as I specialize in both sculpture and drawing, I’m interested in and good at applying the relationship of two-dimensional images and three-dimensional sculptures. So perspective effect is often used in my works. Second, combination of traditional art form and contemporary art concept can be also found in my work. For instance, contents of my subway series works are all about the contemporary scenes in New York City and life style of New Yorkers. But I apply a lot of classic paintings in terms of composition and the format of Europe medieval relief. Moreover, techniques of Chinese traditional brick sculpture and some stage set approaches are also adopted in my works.
