Diana Zrnic
Using the method of deconstruction and intertwining I am dealing with the problem of poverty, routine of everyday life, alienation of people and error in communication between them by exploring the boundaries of understanding life as a game and people, just like in a theatre show, playing different roles. Most recently body of work takes a critical view of social, political and cultural issues. I oppose looking through rose-colored glasses by dealing with complex narratives which I often combine in one piece of work. My method consists of making either a small collage sketch or a computer-based sketch in drawing program which I later translate into a bigger scale painting. Final products are series of figurative/abstract paintings of interrelated memories that resonate with socio-cultural agenda. Technique I use is mixed media which mainly includes combining acrylics, oil paints and pastels. The objective of my work is to explore if art can have any significant impact on people struggling merely to survive. Thus, I am wondering about the effectiveness of art when dealing with serious issues like extreme poverty. Can art be an educational instrument which empowers people through participation? As art offers the possibility of opposition, does it at the same time offers the possibility of change? Moreover, should art live up to such responsibilities in the first place? Within this context, I am interested in mentioned subjects which I strive to approach in a provocative and direct way, pointing my finger at the question I am dealing with, seeking justice, sympathy and appreciation. It is through visual art, traditional and non-traditional media that I want to communicate and interact with diversified audience about issues relevant to their lives. I say we can’t live in a world where one man’s trash is another man’s food. My aim is to raise the cultural consciousness surrounding this critical issues.
