Gerz was born in Berlin in 1940. Now lives in Ireland. Although he decided to study abroad twice, in London in 1959 and in Basel, Switzerland from 1961 to 1966, he belongs to a generation which experienced the Fifties in Germany as a continuum that didn t end with the decade itself but rather led to a different social atmosphere some time around 1968.
