Pierre Alechinsky

Pierre Alechinsky is a Belgian artist known for his founding of the avant-garde CoBrA group in post-war Europe. Along with Karel Appel and Asger Jorn, Alechinsky formed the movement based on the principles of Jean Dubuffet and Art Brut, inspired by its expressive nature and freedom from traditional artistic constraints. Born on October 19, 1927 in Brussels, Belgium, the painter and illustrator moved to Paris after studying at the ?cole Nationale Sup?rieure d?Architecture et des Arts D?coratifs in his home city. A trip to Japan in 1955 prompted him to incorporate the traditional processes of Japanese calligraphy into his practice. A later move toward the fantastical during the 1950s, showed hints of the bizarre imagery found in the work of Flemish masters Pieter Brueghel and Hieronymus Bosch. Alechinsky was the subject of a retrospective at the Muse?s Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique in 2007. The artist lives and works in Paris, France.http://www.artnet.com/artists/pierre-alechinsky/
