Calls for visual arts organizations to enhance access
February 11, Toronto…The Organization for the Democratization of the Visual Arts
(ODBK), a European-based activist organization that wants to create a more inclusive
and democratic art world globally, has launched in Canada.
ODBK, established in 20xx, plans to support visual arts institutions to become more
accessible and diverse and has partnered with a seasoned Equity, Diversity & Inclusion
(EDI) Advisor, Amorell Saunders N’Daw, to make an impact in Canada.
“We’re thrilled to be working with Amorell to identify opportunities for museums,
galleries, arts programs and arts-based organizations to enhance access to the arts,”
said ODBK Founder, David Hinojosa, a Mixed & New Media Artist based in Berlin,
Germany. “In these challenging times, art can serve as a source of comfort and hope
and we strive to work with Canadian arts organizations to break down barriers that
prevent more members of the public from benefiting from art.”
“The desire to make art spaces more equitable, diverse and inclusive is a goal that
resonates with me. I’m excited to be partnering with global artists who are passionate
about wanting to democratize the visual art world,” said Saunders N’Daw , who has
been an EDI advisor and practitioner for more than three decades. “I look forward to
helping ODBK realize its mission here in Canada.”
Some of the initiatives that the arts group plans to offer to Canadian arts organizations
include webinars, research, advising and a novel tiered EDI certification process. “We
hope that our efforts to help arts organizations deepen inclusive practices will be
beneficial for artists and audiences alike, Saunders N’Daw added.
ODBK strives for an art world where equity-deserving groups, underrepresented artists,
and art communities are seamlessly integrated into the visual art ecosystem and where
the knowledge and experiences of all participants shape its evolution.
ODBK’s mission is to forge innovative and intelligent systems to challenge and
transform the current status quo governing the art world, utilize cutting-edge digital
technology tools to create and support ideas and projects that enable art communities
to engage in democratic decision-making and provide support and opportunities for
emerging artists and underrepresented art communities.
