Inequality in the art world, illusion or reality?

The world has achieved great progress when it comes to equality in the last decades on many grounds. However, there is still much to be done, especially in the art world, where fame and personal networks play a major role in evaluating artworks. This makes it harder for emerging artists to break through and build a career in the current art market.
The numbers show that inequality in the art world is unfortunately not illusionary, it is real and significant.

  • 96.1% of artworks sold at auction are by male artists. Bocart et al. 2017, Glass Ceilings in the Art Market
  • 85% of artists in major U.S. museums are white. Cornell University 2018
  • Only five women made the list of the top 100 artists by cumulative auction value between 2011-2016. Artnet Intelligence Report, 2018.
